It would be hard to claim that Shepard Fairey continues to be subversive, in my opinion, because of his embrace by the market and mainstream culture, two factors that usually, but don’t always, have a stultifying effect on courage. But Fairey’s art continues to grow more intricate and stunning. I can’t tell you how often I’ve turned the corner in New York and thought, “wow, that is truly fantastic, what a blessing for this street corner, what a vision.” What’s more, he seems to genuinely give a damn about justice.
